Build a strong business risk assessment: workshop for sole traders

This interactive workshop is designed to help you create, review or improve your business risk assessment with support from our team.

If you're a sole trader in the designated non-financial businesses and professions sector, you need a business risk assessment that reflects your business, helps you manage risk, and stays up to date.

There is no expectation that your business risk assessment is already complete or perfect. The purpose of the workshop is to help you improve it, wherever you're starting from.

What to expect

This is a two-hour interactive workshop with opportunities to work on your own business risk assessment throughout the session. You'll meet members of the designated non-financial businesses and professions supervisory team who will support you throughout the session.

The workshop includes:

  • a short overview of what good business risk assessments look like and why they matter
  • a guided walkthrough of each section of the business risk assessment template
  • practical examples of how risks can increase or reduce
  • guidance on documenting controls clearly and effectively
  • dedicated time to work on your own document with our support
  • opportunities to ask questions, discuss common challenges and hear practical solutions in an open and collaborative environment
  • an overview of our expectations during supervisory engagement

You'll learn

  • what a proportionate business risk assessment looks like
  • how to identify and assess risks relevant to your business
  • how controls link to those risks in practice
  • how to make your business risk assessment a useful day-to-day business tool, not just a regulatory document

You'll leave with

  • a clearer and more effective business risk assessment
  • a better understanding of the risks relevant to your business
  • greater confidence in assessing and documenting those risks proportionately
  • practical tips you can continue to use in your business
  • access to supporting guidance and templates

What to bring

Please bring a digital version of your current business risk assessment. You'll have the opportunity to update it during the workshop.

You can use any format. However, we recommend using our Excel business risk assessment template, as it will make it easier to follow the session and apply any changes as you go.
